The 1999 classic sci-fi movie "The Matrix" is going to get a reboot. If reports are to be believed, Warner Bros. has already started working on the project.
A close source revealed to the Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday that the movie is still in an early stage of development, though not much has been further revealed.
Reportedly, the movie's original writers, the Wachowski brothers won't write the remake. Instead, Zak Penn, who wrote the X-Men franchise and The Avengers screenplays, is in talks to pen the screenplay for the remake.
Sources also revealed that the potential interest for the lead role is "Creed" fame Michael B. Jordan, reports the Daily Beast. At this point, it can't be said that original mind behind the classic cult and its two sequels, the Wachowski brothers will return for the project. Although, the producer of the original trilogy is believed to have approached the Warner Bros. for the reboot of the "The Matrix", who according to sources, sold his interest to the studio in 2012 for about $30 million.
According to the Rolling Stone, it is also unclear whether the new idea will take on the reboot into feature films or a TV series. In an interview, Keanu Reeves, who played the lead role in the 1999 movie, expressed his desire to reprise his role, if the Wachowskis are involved in the project. "They would have to write and direct it. It would be weird, but why not?" said the 52-year-old.
"The Matrix" was first of its kind movies, which became an unexpected hit after the release, due to its unique concept and groundbreaking special effects. The movie went on to win four Oscars, which was followed by two highly successful sequels.
Fans would surely wish to relive the epic saga, but without Keanu Reeves and the Wachowskis brothers, would it really hold the kind of charisma the earlier movie had?
