The popular true-crime podcast "Serial" is set to return for a second season, according to Time.
No details as to when the podcast's new season will air but the show's staff posted a message on their official website confirming the return and saying fans have contributed immensely to extending their time on air.
"Last week, we asked people who've been listening to 'Serial' to chip in if they wanted a second season," the message read. "'This American Life' funded the bulk of Season One, but for 'Serial' To continue, it needs to pay for itself."
The message continued, "Today, we have good news: between the money you donated and sponsorship, we'll be able to make a second season. We don't know yet what the story will be or exactly when we'll be airing Season Two, but we'll be working it as soon as this season ends."
The first season of the podcast tackles the real-life murder mystery of Hae Min Lee, according to Variety. Lee went missing in 1999 and was found dead a few weeks later. Lee's ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was convicted for the murder but he maintains that he is innocent.
Speaking to the New York Times, the podcast's executive producer and host Sarah Koenig revealed she does not know how the first season's story would end.
"I'm not being fake-naive or something, but I really don't [know how it would end] - the end was never the thing of it for me," she said. "It does not keep me up at night. It may keep up my producers more."
She added, "It's not my responsibility to make a perfect ending. I do want a solid ending that is based in my reporting. But I don't feel a responsibility to make it the kind of entertainment that you would get on some TV drama."
Meanwhile, donations for the new season can still be made through the Chicago Public Media donation website. Supporters can also text the word Serial to 25383.
