Angelina Jolie and the cast and crew of "Unbroken" were present during the world premiere of the World War II film in Sydney, Australia, 9news reported.
Jolie, who served as the director and producer of the film, was joined at the event by the film's producer, Matt Baer, stars Jack O'Connell and Miyavi Ishihara, and her husband Brad Pitt.
The war drama film was shot in locations such as New South Wales and Queensland, and was based on the best-selling book of the same name by Laura Hillenbrand.
The film tells the true story of Olympic sprinter Louis Zamperini, whose plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean during the World War II. He spent 47 days on a life raft before being held captive by the Japanese. He spent two years as a prisoner-of-war.
"We were so happy to bring the film back here. It was nice to see everyone again," Jolie said during a press conference with journalist Ray Martin.
She also spoke about her purpose for making the film and delivering its powerful message.
"I wanted to put this out in the world to remind everybody of the strength of the human spirit and brotherhood and faith and all of the things that will get us through hard times," she said.
Jolie said that while "Unbroken" inspired her, directing the film also gave her a sense of hope, according to ABC News.
While making the film, she was able to meet Zamperini and was also able to show him an early cut of the film prior to his death in July.
"I think as a human being, as a mother, as someone who works internationally, I needed desperately to know a man like Louis Zamperini in my life, to know that there is hope," she said. "The strength of a strong heart and an indomitable will is valuable and that's worth something."
"Unbroken" is Jolie's second directorial effort, following the 2011 film "In the Land of Blood and Honey," which was set during the Bosnian war.
