A new "Pee-Wee" movie is coming to the big screen!
Pee-wee Herman himself, Paul Reubens, stopped by "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" Wednesday, Oct. 29, and confirmed that the iconic geek character will star in a new film.
"There is going to be one," the 62-year-old "The Nightmare Before Christmas" voice actor told Jimmy Fallon, while promoting the new release of the Blu-ray box set of his award-winning Saturday morning kids show "Pee-wee's Playhouse" that aired on CBS from 1986-1991.
"And I was hoping I could make this huge announcement tonight, but it's a week away, I think, from being announced," he said.
Though Reubens was not able to reveal too many details about the project just yet, he did say that Judd Apatow will be producing and that production on the film would start next February. He also said that a director had already been hired, though he would not say who.
"Steven Spielberg?" Fallon asked. "Steven Spielberg!" Reubens enthusiastically replied, before shaking his head no and adding, "It's called P.T."
News that Apatow was developing an untitled Pee-wee Herman feature for Universal was first reported in June 2010, according to Variety. But there has not been much buzz about it as of late - until now.
The script was written by Reubens and comedian Paul Rust, whose writing credits include "Inglourious Basterds," "I Love You, Beth Cooper," "Arrested Development" and "Comedy Bang! Bang!"
The Pee-wee Herman character was originally developed in the 1970s from Reubens' early improv work with Los Angeles troupe the Groundlings, according to Rolling Stone. When Reubens failed to make it to the final cut for the 1980 cast of "Saturday Night Live," Reubens adapted the eccentric character for the stage with "The Pee-wee Herman Show," which gained nationwide fame after being filmed and released by HBO as a 1981 special.
Pee-wee became more popular after the 1985 Tim Burton-directed film "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" was released. The box-office success of that comedy flick led to the launch of the TV series "Pee-wee's Playhouse," and to the release of the movie sequel, "Big Top Pee-wee" in 1988.
The character's legacy, however, was somewhat diminished after Reubens was arrested in 1991 for indecent exposure in an adult theater in Florida, and after he pleaded guilty to possessing obscene material in 2004, according to People.
Meanwhile, also during Reubens' appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon," a clip of him redubbing the recently released "Avengers: Age of Ultron" trailer using Pee-wee's signature voice was also shown. Watch the video below.
