In Season 3, Michonne (Danai Gurira) became one of the members of Rick's (Andrew Lincoln) group after she informed them that Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) were abducted by Merle (Michael Rooker) and were taken to Woodbury. But even though the prison team was kind of quick to welcome her with open arms at the time, she still occasionally got out of the prison alone and accomplished some missions all by herself.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gurira opened up about what it is like for her katana-wielding character to work with a bigger group with a number of new faces like Abraham, Eugene, Rosita and Tara.
"I think she's still evolving and settling into the idea that I'm now going to be a part of this team," she said. "Before she was a part of the team, but she had time to get on her horse and go away and spend time alone. But fully immersed and invested is another level of commitment. It really is about her living in that and then what that evolved into for her in terms of really deciding, I want to live. I want to live and I want to live with people and I want to be committed."
The 36-year-old Zimbabwean-American actress also revealed that just like Michonne working with a bigger group of people is also a new experience for her.
She explained: "Michonne has been a loner, and that did involve how I used to shoot. I would shoot, just me, and maybe a couple other characters. It is kind of great to work with such a larger group. It has been a new experience for me, as it is for Michonne, to step into being amongst everybody and working as a team and not having to be this loner who just looks out for herself."
Gurira previously said that fans can expect a more ferocious Michonne when "The Walking Dead" returns on AMC Sunday, Oct. 12.
"I think that if you have people to protect, you can actually become more ferocious, like a lioness," Gurira told reporters at San Diego Comic-Con last July, according to Comic Book Resources.
"I used to say [Michonne] was like a cat, but now I think she's more like a lioness because she really cares about things she doesn't want to see harmed. She will go possibly further to protect them than she would have done before," Gurira added.
Michonne is also speculated to get a lot closer to Rick next season as she keeps on taking on a mother-like role to Carl (Chandler Riggs), according to Bustle.
