'The Walking Dead' Star Melissa McBride Talks Carol's Mental And Emotional State In Season 5, Her Imminent Reunion With Rick's Group

"The Walking Dead" Season 4 is probably the most serious season for Carol. He was kicked out of the prison after Rick discovered that it was her who killed and burned the bodies of Tyreese's girlfriend, Karen, and David. Later in the season, she also killed her adopted daughter Lizzie after realizing that the sweet little girl was a psychopath. But after all these events, Melissa McBride, who plays Carol, said that her character is "holding up pretty well."

"The characters are adapting to that kind of world where you just can't get a break," McBride told Entertainment Weekly. "It's interesting to see how they're becoming someone new almost under the weight of this world.

The 49-year-old actress said that it would be nice to see how Carol will be affected by her actions. "I don't know how anyone could get through what she's done and not be affected by it," she said. "It's going to be great to see exactly how she is affected by it. Will she want to check out and go, "Oh this is too much for me," or will love conquer all and caring for her group and continuing in this world to fight?"

"I love the questions that this show brings," she added. "We fight so hard, holding out for something. What? What are they holding out for? Why? It's so brutal. I love it."

Aside from its brutality, the Lexington, Kentucky-born actress said at the San Diego Comic-Con last July that she loves the mega-hit AMC zombie drama because she enjoys playing the "deep, nasty, messy stuff" of Carol's storyline, according to Variety.

Since the release of the first trailer for Season 5, fans learned that Carol and Tyreese (and baby Judith) will imminently be reunited with Rick's group. When asked how Carol is feeling about her reunion with Rick - the same guy who banished her from the group, McBride told EW: "I can tell you that she is very certain with some of her feelings, very certain, and other feelings she has, she's got some mixed feelings. I think more than anything she's ready to be accountable in whatever way."

Andrew Lincoln, on the other hand, seemed to suggest that his character, Rick, and Carol will still get along well with each other the moment they crossed each other's path considering both characters have very close personality types.

"We're all very close in personality types," Lincoln told TV Guide. "Rick looks in Carol's eyes and knows that's a person who can pull the trigger." So there's a commonality that plays out between... them that makes it really interesting to act, because there's an almost telepathic thing where you go, "I know what you're thinking because I'm thinking the same s-t."

"The Walking Dead" Season 5 premieres on Oct. 12 at 9:00 p.m. ET on AMC.
