Electric car maker Tesla Motors released a new software update for its Model S cars on Friday, according to Westside Story.
According to the company, owners of cars sold in mid-2012 are eligible to receive the over-the-air update.
The software update, which is now the version 6.0, comes with a variety of high-tech features. One of its features lets drivers avoid traffic jams.
By communicating with other Model S cars on the streets, the software gathers information regarding the traffic conditions. This instantly notifies drivers which roads they should not take to avoid getting stuck in traffic.
In addition, the new system analyzes the usual routes drivers take. It then assesses the traffic conditions on those roads before the drivers leave their houses. The software then suggests alternate routes in case the usual ones are filled with other vehicles, The Verge reported.
Aside from the traffic-based navigation, the updated software is equipped with a new calendar system that works with the driver's smartphone.
Through the Model S' touch panel screen, the calendar displays the schedule of meetings and other events noted on the mobile device. If the scheduled appointments have addresses, a simple tap on the entry will immediately display the navigation directions on how to get there.
Another notable feature of the software update is the ability to start the car remotely using a smartphone. Through a mobile app and a password, owners can start their Model S cars and drive them without using a key, according to 9 To 5 Mac.
"With this release, we are now offering Model S Owners an enhanced navigation system that incorporates real-time traffic, and a new calendar app that allows you to view and navigate to events from your phone's calendar," the company said in a statement.
"The new calendar app also requires use of a new Tesla Mobile App (currently available for iPhone only) - which also has new notifications functionality and the ability to start your car (in case you forgot your kefob)," Tesla continued.
