Could Daryl Dixon be losing a hand in the upcoming fifth season of "The Walking Dead?"
Norman Reedus, who plays the crossbow-wielding hero in the hit AMC zombie drama, took to Twitter Thursday, Sept. 4, and posted a photo of himself in full Daryl costume while special effects guru Greg Nicotero attends to his character's hand. "I said yes," captioned the 45-year-old actor.
While the photograph could be taken as a joke since Nicotero is seen as if he is proposing to Reedus and putting a ring on his finger, a closer observation of the character's hand suggests that it may be infected by a walker.
In an attempt to further teased fans that Daryl may be losing a hand next season, the "Silent Hills" star tweeted out a follow-up photo of his hand on the ground with a ring on it, but it looks like it has been severed. Reedus captioned the photo, "Divorced."
Either Reedus just revealed a major spoiler for the show's next season or he is just goofing around and messing with the fans' minds.
In the comic books, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) loses his hand, but some of the characters' story lines in the original source sometimes happen to a different character on the TV adaptation, according to Comicbook.
In fact, Nicotero told Yahoo! TV last month that sometimes they are faithful to the comic and sometimes they take some liberties. "The Lizzie-Mika story was in the comic book but was laid out a little bit differently, with different characters," he shared as an example.
Nicotero added that fans could expect the same treatment in the upcoming Season 5 of the show.
"We continue to mix it up a little bit so the people who do read the comic book feel like they're still getting their cake and eating it, too, but we change it up enough that it's still new and exciting and interesting," he said. "And I can definitely say that we continue to honor the graphic novel in original yet familiar ways in Season 5."
Meanwhile, Reedus recently opened up on how he thinks Daryl has changed since the character's first appearance in the show.
"In season 1 he had such a chip on his shoulder and didn't think people trusted him and he didn't trust other people. Everything just kind of came out of the side of his head," "The Boondocks Saints" actor told Entertainment Weekly. "This season he's very much in your face and his shoulders are square to you and he means what he says."
"He'll look you in the face. People rely on him now and I think before he thought people would cross the street if he was walking toward you. Now he's an integral part of the group. People trust him and I think he's accepted that trust," he added.
"The Walking Dead" Season 5 premieres Oct. 12 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
