Chris Brown Pleads Guilty in Washington Assault Case

Singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty on Tuesday to hitting a man outside a hotel in Washington and was sentenced to time served.

The assault happened in October last year, while the singer was still on probation for beating up his then-girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna, hours before the 2009 Grammy Awards.

The victim in the Washington assault, Parker Adams, told police that Brown attacked him after he attempted to get in a picture that was being taken of the singer and two women.

Brown, 24, had previously pleaded not guilty to the charge, and the trial had been re-scheduled for April. It was delayed.

As the Washington assault happened at a time when Brown was still on probation for assaulting Rihanna, the outcome of the trial possibly affected Brown's case with his former girlfriend.

In a court hearing in May, a judge in Los Angeles sentenced Brown to an additional 131 days in jail. The singer was released in June.

His lawyer, Danny Onorato, told court that the Grammy-winning singer had already received punishment for the assault. He referred to the time Brown served in California and his four-month inpatient counseling after the revocation of his probation.

"To say that he's been punished severely in this matter is an understatement," Onorato said. The lawyer attributed the inactivity in Brown's career to his legal troubles and said the singer wants to take responsibility for his mistakes now so he may be able to support his new album by touring.

The judge agreed with the lawyer and sentenced the singer to time served. Brown spent two days in jail in the aforesaid case.

"I would like to say to the court that I'm sorry," the Brown said as he pleaded guilty to the charge. He made no further comments as he left the court, followed by photographers and a number of fans.
