Allison Tolman and Shonda Rhimes will appear as guest stars in the upcoming third season of "The Mindy Project."
Fresh off her Emmy-nominated breakout performance as Deputy Molly Solverson on FX's dark comedy crime-drama anthology series "Fargo," Tolman will have a two-episode arc on the next season of Mindy Kaling's Fox rom-com show, TV Guide reported.
The 32-year-old Houston, Texas-born actress will play Abby Berman, who is described as a "sweet romance novelist" who ends up on a blind date with fratty doctor Peter Prentice, played by Adam Pally.
Meanwhile, Rhimes, who is best known as the creator, head writer and executive producer of the medical drama television series "Grey's Anatomy," its spin-off "Private Practice" and political thriller series "Scandal," will appear as herself in one episode of the comedy series when it returns for its third season on Sept. 16, TVLine reported.
This will be Rhimes' first acting gig, and details about her storyline are being kept under wraps. The 44-year-old Chicago, Illinois-native is a self-proclaimed fan of both the show and its stars.
Tolman and Rhimes joins previously announced guest stars, including "Cheers" alum Rhea Perlman as Dr. Danny Castellano's (Chris Messina) mom, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's" Rob McElhenny as Morgan Tookers' (Ike Barinholtz) cousin and "The Soul Man" actress Niecy Nash as the new work nemesis of Dr. Mindy Lahiri (Kaling) and the new chief of Shulman & Associates' admitting hospital, E! News reported.
Last season, Dr. Mindy fell in love for her colleague and office sparring partner, Dr. Danny. Their relationship went to a whole new level when they shared a kiss in an airplane. But the moment their feet hit the ground, the two had difficulty making their relationship work.
Danny broke things off, but acted like a jealous boyfriend when Mindy hung out with other guys. In the end of Season 2, Mindy the two reunited atop the Empire State Building, with Mindy believing she got her fairytale ending, according to Broadway World.
