"The Last of Robin Hood" actress Dakota Fanning admitted she did not connect with her character Beverly Aadland, the 17-year-old girlfriend of Hollywood legend Errol Flynn played by Kevin Kline.
"It's so weird because when I was making it I didn't really connect with her in that way at all. Just because I feel like our experiences are so different because she just has no real desire to be where she's at," the 20-year-old actress told amNewYork.
"It's not important to her at all. And for me, it is so important and always has been. So I don't feel like I connected with her on that much," she added.
For Fanning, she was more drawn to Aadland "as a human, a woman, somebody who gets into a situation kind of naively and then starts enjoying the situation and having this relationship and being really happy and kind of discovering who she really is through this relationship."
Now at her senior year at New York University, Fanning is majoring in women's studies, concentrating on the portrayal of women in film and culture. She is currently working on a dissertation on Bette Davis.
"I'm told we have similar eyes, so I'm drawn to her," Fanning said about Davis in another interview with The Guardian.
Fanning also described her six-year-old self as "very mature and calm and rational."
Before Fanning did the 2001 film "I Am Sam," her agent had to choose between the role as Sean Penn's daughter in the film and a lead role in the short-lived TV series "Fighting Fitzgeralds."
The "I Am Sam" role earned Fanning the Critics' Choice award as the Best Young Actor beating Haley Joel Osment and Daniel Radcliffe.
Orlando Bloom had to carry her then so she could reach the microphone for her acceptance speech, in which she thanked "God for all of the things He has given me and for the best agents in the world."
