Suge Knight is out of surgery and currently recovering in ICU after he was shot six times in the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 24, at a pre-VMAs party hosted by Chris Brown, TMZ reported.
Knight, CEO of Black Kapital Records and co-founder and former CEO of Death Row Records, was one of three club patrons struck by gunfire around 1:30 a.m. at 1OAK on West Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard, said Sgt. C. Tatar, watch commander at the Los Angeles County sheriff's West Hollywood station, according to The Associated Press.
The two other victims, a man and a woman, were also being treated at hospitals and were expected to recover.
Two gunshots were initially fired at 1:35 a.m., according to Us Weekly. Security helped Brown and his table leave the scene while many others in the crowd fled. At 1:50 a.m., police rushed into the club and forced the remaining guests to leave with their hands in the air.
"People were screaming and yelling and most ran out immediately," an eyewitness told Us Weekly. "The floor was covered with glass from everyone dropping their drinks."
In the wake of the shooting, Knight's family issued the following statement to Revolt: "The family of Suge Knight ask that you keep Suge in your prayers and to stray away from the negativity portrayed by the media. Suge is currently resting and has lost a lot of blood, he's human. He's done a lot of things for the community and the culture as a whole so we ask that you respect that."
Though the incident came less than 24 hours before MTV's Video Music Awards, which was held Sunday evening, Aug. 24, in Inglewood, Calif., the network said it had no affiliation or connection to the event.
A representative for Brown told Rolling Stone that the party was to celebrate the upcoming release of his album "X." "Chris hosted an event in Los Angeles last night to celebrate the upcoming release of his album X, during which an incident occurred," a rep for the 25-year-old "Loyal" hitmaker told the music magazine. "This incident did not involve Chris; he was merely the host of the event. He has and will continue to cooperate with the investigation."
Sunday morning, Brown took to Twitter and seemed to address the shooting. "It's disappointing that we as a society can't have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes," he wrote. "Miss me with the bullshit!!!"
Investigation is still ongoing and authorities are still seeking a suspect.
