Chloe Grace Moretz stars in the new drama film "If I Stay," and she knows that some people may find it similar to the other "doomed" teenage romance "The Fault in Our Stars," Yahoo! Movie reported.
But the 17-year-old actress pointed out the differences between the two flicks, which are both based on young adult novels.
"It encompasses a lot more than just death or just young love. [It's] passion for music, and love of family, and friendship, and bonding... It's life in a sense," Moretz said of "If I Stay," which is an adaptation of Gayle Forman's novel of the same name.
Moretz, who is best known for her role as the foul-mouthed 11-year-old vigilante Hit-Girl in the superhero film franchise "Kick-Ass," plays the quiet high school girl and cello virtuoso named Mia Hall in the R. J. Cutler-directed film.
Mia thinks that the hardest decision she would ever face would be whether to pursue her musical dreams at Juilliard or follow a different path to be with her rebellious boyfriend, Adam (Jamie Blackley). But one day, Mia and her family get into a terrible car accident that takes the lives of her mother Kat (Mireille Enos), her father Denny (Joshua Leonard), and her little brother Teddy (Jakob Davies), while she lies in a coma.
In coma, Mia has an out-of-body experience and must decide if she should wake up and continue living without her beloved family, or slip away and die.
"It's not just about your first love," Moretz said during a recent press junket at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, according to The Oklahoman. "That's a very small plot point in the scheme of this gigantic, all-encompassing kind of story."
"I think this movie is really going to hit home with a lot of people, they're going to go and see it because it deals with life themes that we all know and we all have seen and felt and heard," said Moretz at the premiere of the film at the TCL Chinese Theatre Wednesday, Aug 20, according to Variety.
"If I Stay" opens in theaters Friday, Aug. 22.
