Earning $65 million, Paramount Pictures' comic-book adaptation "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" featuring Megan Fox tops the weekend box office, US News has learned.
With the box office success, Paramount Pictures announced in the morning of Aug. 10, Sunday a planned sequel of the action film set for June 3, 2016, Box Office Mojo reported.
The success of the reboot came mostly from distinctly different audiences, according to Paramount Pictures' head of domestic marketing and distribution Megan Colligan.
These audiences include young people who are familiar with a new Nickelodeon animated TV series and men who remembered the 1980s and 1990s franchise that generated a cartoon series, toy line and a live-action film trilogy.
"It's odd when you have 25- to 35-year-olds and then 7- to 12-year-olds really excited about the same film. The teen audience was actually the one that wasn't as familiar with the property, so we put a lot of focus on teens," Colligan said.
"I think we did a great job of getting them out there to see the film, which is so fun, refreshing and unique," she added.
In second place is "Guardians of the Galaxy" starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista. Earning $41.5 million, the Marvel Studios' fell 56 percent in its second weekend summing up to a total of $175.9 million since its debut,
Like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "Guardians of the Galaxy" has already a confirmed sequel set for 2017.
"This is the third weekend in a row we've had a film overperform. It's finally starting to feel like summer. The perception of August used to be that it was the month of the B-sides, not the hits," Rentrak senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said.
"The movies are now defining what August can be, not the month defining what the movies should be," Dergarabedian added.
Meanwhile, Fox admitted she is not into cooking during her recent interview with People.
"Does scrambled eggs count? I really love cooking for the holidays, and I always try and do something challenging. But on a day-to-day basis, it's not my thing," the 28-year-old actress said about the last meal she prepared.
Playing a fearless reporter in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Fox also revealed she does not only go to the gym with her trainer twice a week. She said she has also changed her diet and completely cut out bread.
