The FCC is investigating NBC after their fourth of July special "Miley Cyrus: Bangerz Tour," which included performances from Lisbon and Barcelona. The acts were filled with typical Miley antics, but one subject that drew complaints was a sexualized performance with a man dressed as Abraham Lincoln.
"She was dressed more in line with a video geared towards MTV," the complaint reads. "Her performance was impropriate [sic] for broadcast TV, as she grinded along there was a costumed performer depicting President Lincoln following behind her and alongside her and the character acted quite lecherous even patting her on the backside. Very patriotic for the 4th ya think?"
"I am offended, appalled and ready to start taking public action to remove this garbage from our televisions," wrote a parent who had issues with the PG-13/TV-14 rating.
A third complainer echoed these claims, saying the special was "very graphic and disturbing for a Sunday evening 9 pm summertime broadcast."
According to Fox411, NBC was probably well-aware of what the outcome would be, giving the former Disney star's controversial nature.
"NBC and Miley are pursuing ratings. It is fairly obvious that executives knew what would happen when they decided to televise this special," said executive vice president for Levick Strategic Communications Gene Grabowski. "They knew the programming would be risqué and in questionable taste."
"NBC put Miley on knowing full well it would generate controversy," vice president of business & culture at the Media Research Center Dan Gainor agreed. "Unless the fine is several million dollars, they will view it as a cost of doing business as a 'hip' network."
Others feel those who are offended by the broadcast can avoid this by watching another program.
"In the '70s, everybody was very aware of the antics of Alice Cooper on stage with the guillotine and blood and theatrics. If you feel it's inappropriate, don't go," said Rolling Stone journalist Steve Baltin. "Likewise, you know Miley's show today. If you are worried about it, don't watch."
