Kesha spent time in rehab earlier this year to battle an eating disorder, and she penned an essay for Elle UK about the unrealistic pressures she felt she faced in the industry. Keep reading to find out what she had to say!
"I felt like part of my job was to be as skinny as possible, and to make that happen, I had been abusing my body," the songstress wrote.
"The music industry has set unrealistic expectations for what a body is supposed to look like, and I started becoming overly critical of my own body because of that. I felt like people were always lurking, trying to take pictures of me with the intention of putting them up online or printing them in magazines and making me look terrible."
The "Rising Star" judge went on to explain how she felt hypocritical, as she sends positive messages in her music.
"I felt like a liar, telling people to love themselves as they are, while I was being hateful to myself and really hurting my body. I wanted to control things that weren't in my power, but I was controlling the wrong things."
She then elaborated on finally being ready to seek help for her problem.
"I knew I was ready to leave when I'd gained enough confidence to get on a plane knowing there would be paparazzi at the airport at the other end. I was right - they were there. But this time, when I saw the pictures, I felt OK," she states.
This is not the first time the singer opened up about her eating disorder. In June she told Teen Vogue what it took to admit she had a problem.
"My eating disorder is something I've been struggling with for a while. People will make up stories, but I went to rehab for an eating disorder - nothing more and nothing less. I decided to face my problem head-on," Kesha explained.
"My whole message is to love who you are and accept all your beautiful imperfections."
"When I felt I was slipping into unloving territory with myself, I knew I had to listen to my own advice and correct it...I felt I needed to get help, not only for myself but also for my fans. My worst fear in life is to be fake," the blonde songstress continued.
